MES Vocabulary Focus

Meadowview Elementary School is focusing on a schoolwide initiative to increase students’ vocabulary.  Each morning, the MES news crew introduces the day’s vocabulary word and gives the school the definition and how it is used in a sentence.  Each grade then enriches the students with age appropriate activities to reinforce retention and broaden vocabulary usage.  Fifth grade for example, uses a thesaurus and dictionary to identify synonyms, antonyms, and parts of speech for each term and then creates a new sentence.  Some examples of the vocabulary words that Meadowview has learned are: unanimous, behemoth, dishevel, zany, verbose, and desist.  The students enjoy trying to use classroom teachers to describe the words they are studying.
