This morning, GES students and staff celebrated our retirees and recent staff graduates with a special walk through the school. Congratulations to our staff on recent accomplishments and future endeavors.

On May 4, the GES Run Club showed up and showed out at a local race put on by Abingdon High School coach Brent Swiney.
To prepare for this race, students met twice weekly afterschool. The run club program includes a training plan built to prepare students for endurance running. Over the course of 12 weeks, students build stamina to run for extended amounts of time. This training included interval training, track work, hill sprints, strength workouts, and good old fashion fun!
Greendale had 45 runners in the 5k and 9 in the one mile race, all composed of students, parents, and employees. This was a phenomenal turnout!
We are so proud of all the hard work and dedication put on display by our community! We look forward to continuing this program in years to come and building a community that loves to move and get outside!
Abingdon Youth Football & Cheer
Thank you to our fantastic group of School Lunch Heroes. The ladies who provide incredible meals that keep us well fed and ready to learn! They are the Rock Stars of GES!
Today, fourth graders at Greendale Elementary took part in an auction. They enjoyed spending tokens they have earned as exemplary Greendale Lions. After the auction, the students were able to spend more tokens at the fourth grade store. This has been a wonderful way of teaching real-life math skills.
Congratulations to our 4th grade History Bowl team. Our GES Lions placed 3rd in the Washington County History Bowl held at the SWHEC. We are so proud of the hard work of the team and their sponsor, Mrs. Davenport. It's a great day to be a Lion!
On Thursday April 10, Greendale Elementary hosted Creative Arts Night. Fourth and fifth grade students presented a concert of jazz and blues music played on recorder, featuring improvisational soloists Sophia S, Lynnleigh H, Weston S, Sydney M, and Alyssa R. In addition, an art show was on display throughout the school featuring artwork for each student in the school.
Greendale's Creative Arts Night will be held this evening at 6pm. Please join us as our GES Lions share their artwork, music, and writing.
PTO is compiling a teacher appreciation video for Teacher Appreciation Week. If your child would like to participate, please record a 30-second video clip and email it to bsprinkle@wcs.k12.va.us. The deadline for submission is April 24.
Fifth graders participated in Mean, Median, Mode, and Range Boot Camp as part of their study of statistics. They recorded data from doing exercises, organized it, and found the mean, median, mode, and range for each data set. Who knew learning could be so much fun?!

Summer Enrichment Experience at Virginia Tech
The deadline to apply for SEE VT has been extended to April 15, and all fees have been waived, meaning this incredible opportunity is now free for all campers! SEE VT is a residential camp for rising 6th and 7th grade gifted students from rural communities. At SEE VT, rural middle school students will have access to place-based and rural-focused academic enrichment to include STEM and humanities courses, social activities, exploration of campus life, field trips, and more!
Camp will be held on Virginia Tech's Blacksburg campus June 15-20, 2025. Applications are due by April 15.

Today, we gathered to celebrate the incredible achievement of Greendale Elementary School, which was named a 2024 National ESEA Distinguished School—one of only two schools in Virginia to receive this prestigious honor!
This award recognizes exceptional student performance and academic growth, and we couldn’t be prouder of our students, staff, and school community. As Principal Michael Colston shared, this honor reflects the dedication, hard work, and commitment of everyone at Greendale who makes student success a priority every single day!
